The reason for this is clear – everyone from front line workers to the board of directors fully understands the risks inherent in this industry, and the cost that comes when it’s not properly managed. It’s why leadership goes to such great lengths to mitigate the possibility of avoidable workplace incidents.
But even after 25+ years in the industry, I’m struck by how often that stringent approach fails to carry over into communications planning. Too often when a crisis strikes leadership teams find that there is either no communications plans or protocols in place for them to follow, or realize too late that the plan they assumed would serve them well is woefully inadequate.
When a crisis does strike – and it’s almost inevitable that a company will come face to face with one at some point – leadership is left scrambling, mistakes are made and a situation that could have been effectively managed or even avoided ends up doing maximum damage.
In conversations I know mining leaders often recognize this fact, but worry about the time and effort needed to get a plan in place. As a veteran communicator and CEO of the only strategic communications agency that exclusively serves the mining, supplier and clean energy industries, I’m undertaking an initiative to help those who need criss planning support be prepared.
