As a student pursuing a Bachelor of Media Studies and a Master of Management at the University of British Columbia, I had broad exposure to various media disciplines. Yet, public relations remained an area in which I had no hands-on experience or understanding until I joined PRA Communications.
PRA Communications introduced me to the complexities of how media coverage can transform and influence perceptions of divisive topics like mining. Initially, my understanding of sustainability in mining was shaped by negative media portrayals, which often emphasized environmental degradation and ethical concerns. However, through this internship, I was exposed to a more nuanced perspective. I learned how public relations efforts in the mining industry address and manage these concerns, emphasizing advancements in sustainable practices, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.
Working with seasoned public relations professionals who possess in-depth knowledge of mining has been a transformative experience. Unlike my academic setting, where knowledge is often theoretical, my role at PRA Communications provided practical, real-world exposure to the media’s relationship with society. I gained insights into how mining companies implement and communicate their sustainability initiatives, including innovative technologies and practices aimed at minimizing environmental impact. This deeper understanding helped me recognize the complexities and efforts behind the industry’s push towards sustainability, shifting my perspective to one that appreciates both the challenges and the strides being made.
One key distinction I appreciated about public relations was its approach to brand management and the importance of building and sustaining audience trust. Coming from prior work experience in marketing, where the focus is on promoting products, public relations requires me to manage and maintain a brand’s image. This realization resonated with me more than the product-centric focus of marketing. Through practice in navigating public perception via narrative crafting and new age communication methods, my interest in brand management and storytelling has deepened.
Emerging from this internship, I am eager to apply my skills in new contexts, particularly within the entertainment industry. I am intrigued by how the lessons and skills I’ve gained from public relations can translate into managing the communication and image of individuals, projects, and companies in entertainment media. The versatile skill set I developed at PRA Communications – including copywriting, content creation, and strategic communication – positions me as a competitive candidate for future roles in various media-related fields.
My internship at PRA Communications has been instrumental in bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical application. The skills and insights I have gained will undoubtedly contribute to my future career, equipping me with the tools needed to excel in the dynamic field of public relations. As I continue to build on this foundation, I am excited about leveraging my experience to make meaningful contributions, not only in traditional industries but also in the creative and ever-evolving entertainment sector. This broader perspective has enriched my view of how effective communication can shape public perception and drive success across diverse fields, transforming my initial misconceptions about mining into a nuanced understanding of its role in sustainable development.
