Environmental Assessment & Permitting Communications: Seabridge Gold

Challenge
& Goal

To move forward with its $5 billion mining project, one of the largest copper and gold deposits in the world, Seabridge Gold needed a successful environmental assessment (EA) certificate from the provincial government and approval from the federal government. To obtain the EA Seabridge had to demonstrate clear and enthusiastic support from local communities and stakeholders from across northwest British Columbia and Alaska.

The Ask

To develop and undertake a comprehensive communication and engagement campaign, helping local populations overcome environmental concerns and showing them the opportunities that would come with jobs, skills training and contracting.

Execution

PRA Communications began the project by designing and executing a statistically valid perception audit used to understand stakeholders’ level of acceptance and perceptions of the KSM Project and then led a stakeholder mapping exercise with key senior members of the project team.

Using the perception audit and stakeholder mapping results, PRA Communications created a communication strategy that included specific targeted audiences and encompassed a broad suite of activities, including Indigenous, government and community relations; issues management; media relations; social media; online and digital communications, crisis communications planning; and advertising.

The Results

Not only was Seabridge Gold’s project granted an EA certificate by the BC government and approved by the federal government, but the provincial government has also since been profiling the company as a model for community and Aboriginal engagement, emphasizing its success in garnering public support and earning the social license to operate.

The project was subsequently awarded Provincial and Federal environmental approval and received an 84% approval rating from Stakeholders.

As well, the surveys helped measure public awareness of and support for the project and Seabridge’s level of trust was found favourable among all stakeholders.
